DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, December 6\, 2018 at 16:00 c.t.  Prof. Gasser of Universität Hamburg will present his recent work entitled  \n  \nModelling\, simulation and optimisation of power plants based on renewable energies \n  \nAbstract: \nIn this seminar we discuss the fluid dynamics of  parabolic trough\, solar updraft towers\, energy towers and osmotic power stations.  The main issue is to discuss simple fluid dynamic models which on one hand describe the main features of the mentioned applications and on the other allow for robust and fast numerical simulations and optimization.  \nThis is used for different types of power plants based on renewable energy. Prof. Dr. Frank Vallentin of Universität Köln will present his recent work entitled “Chromatic numbers of geometric graphs” \n\nAbstract: \nA classical problem in discrete geometry (due to Hadwiger and Nelson) is to find the minimal number of colors one needs to color all points in the Euclidean plane so that no two points which are distance 1 apart receive the same color. Similar geometric coloring problems can be posed in the context of the hyperbolic plane\, n-dimensional Euclidean spaces\, n-dimensional spheres\, or coloring the Voronoi tessellation of n-dimensional lattices. In robust optimization\, an uncertainty set has to be defined containing all scenarios to be considered. Availability of historical data often suggests the use of a discrete or polyhedral uncertainty set. By this\, new combinatorial optimization problems are evolved. \nIn this talk\, we discuss a few examples of novel combinatorial optimization problems inspired by uncertainties in network design and production planning. Prof. Mehiddin Al-Baali\, Department of Mathematics and Statistics\, Sultan Qaboos University\, Muscat\, Oman will present his recent work entitled  \nOn the Damped Technique\, Self-Scaling and their Combination when Introduced to the Broyden Family of Methods for Unconstrained Optimization \nRecently\, we have extended the damped-technique in the modified BFGS method of Powell for constrained optimization to the Broyden family of quasi-Newton methods for unconstrained optimization. Appropriate choices for the damped parameter will be suggested to improve the performance of a restricted class of quasi-Newton methods and enforce convergence of many divergent methods. These properties will be illustrated when applied to a simple quadratic function as well as to a set of standard test problems. It will be shown that the proposed damped choices improve the performance of most quasi-Newton methods substantially (or significantly) in several cases. We will also illustrate the useful features of the self-scaling technique for quasi-Newton methods  and its combination with the above damped technique.  \n. \nThe presentation will take place in HS 9. \nPlease join us for coffee at 15:45 in E10.

DESCRIPTION:On Monday\, May 14\, 2018\, at 16:00\,  Prof. Partha Lahiri of the University of Maryland College Park will join the ALOP-Colloquium and present his recent work entitled “Big data in official statistics.” \nAbstract:  The demand for various socio-economic\, transportation\, and health statistics for small geographical areas is steadily increasing at a time when survey agencies are desperately looking for ways to reduce costs to meet fixed budgetary requirements.  In the current survey environment\, the application of standard sample survey methods for small areas\, which require a large sample\, is generally not feasible when considering the costs.    One of the key factors that lead to the success of small area estimation (SAE) methodology is the availability of strong auxiliary variables.  The accessibility of big data from different sources is now bringing new opportunities for statisticians to develop innovative SAE methods.  In this talk\, I will provide an outline of how SAE methods can be adapted to incorporate big data in improving local area statistics.  Then I will discuss my recent collaboration with my UMD colleagues — Professor Cinzia Cirillo of Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering\, and Professor Joseph JaJa of Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering\, and the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS).  Finally\, as an example from our different collaborative research projects\, I will explain how SAE can help solve a seemingly different problem of predicting in real-time traffic by exploiting rich vehicle probe big data. \nThe presentation will take place in HS9. \nPlease join us for coffee at 15:45 in E51.

They\nhave a broad range of applications. Taking uncertainty into account becomes more and\nmore important in many areas. In the context of supply chain management\, a need\nfor control strategies taking these uncertainties into account naturally arises when it\ncomes to production planning. Deviations from the demand actually realized need to\nbe compensated\, which might be very costly and should be avoided. To this end\, we\nconsider different approaches to control the produced amount at a given time to meet\nthe stochastic demand in an optimal way. DESCRIPTION:Prof. Juan Vera and Olga Kuryatnikova of Tilburg University are scheduled to visit the Research Training Group ALOP in March for research collaboration. \n  \nDuring their visit\, they will speak on the following topics: \n  \nCopositive certificates of non-negativity (Prof. Juan Vera) \nAbstract: \nSum-of-squares (sos) certificates of non-negativity\, such as Putinar’s Positivstellensatz\, have been used to obtain powerful numerical techniques to solve polynomial optimization (PO) problems. Using such certificates\, hierarchies of semidefinite relaxations are obtained for PO. Usually the use of sos-certificates requires compactness or stronger assumptions on the feasible set\, limiting the range of applications. \nWe show that under suitable conditions on the polynomial h(x) and the set S\, the non-negativity of a polynomial over the set  {x in S: h(x) = 0} can be certified in terms of the non-negative polynomials on S even if the set S is unbounded. Moreover\, a characterization of the pairs (S\, h) for which  such type of non-negativity certificate exists is provided in terms of an appropriate condition on S and h. Moreover\, the non-negativity certificate presented here readily allows the use of copositive polynomials (as opposed to the more common use of sos). In particular it encompasses the results of Burer and Pena-Vera-Zuluaga for representation of polynomial optimization problems as copositive ones. \n  \nApproximating the cone of copositive kernels with application to the kissing number problem. (Olga Kuryatnikova) \nAbstract: \nRecent research has shown how to generalize copositive formulations of the stable set problem in finite graphs to infinite graphs. This allows to express the kissing number problem\, i.e.\, finding the maximum number of non-overlapping unit spheres that can simultaneously touch another unit sphere\, as an optimization problem over copositive kernels. We generalize two existing approximations to the cone of copositive matrices to obtain approximations to the cone of copositive kernels. \nUsing the latter approximations\, we construct a hierarchy of upper bounds on the kissing number. As a side result\, we characterize positive definite functions invariant under automorphisms of the sphere fixing a given set of points. The presentation will be self-contained. \n  \nThe presentations will take place on Monday March 5 at 10:30 c.t. in E 51.

DESCRIPTION:Prof. Dr. Geovani Grapiglia of the Universidade Federal do Parana in Curitiba\, PR\, Brasil will visit with the students of the RTG ALOP to discuss his research as well as speak during our colloquium on the topic of \nImproved Optimization Methods for Image Registration Problems \n \n Abstract: In many applications\, multiple images of the same subject are obtained at different moments in time and under different conditions. The goal is to identify changes in the subject over time. For a fair comparison\, the images need to be aligned in order to overlap the common features. Image Registration is the problem to find the transformation of images leading to the best overlapping. The mathematical modelling of this type of problem often results in large-scale unconstrained optimization problems to solve. The usual approach is to apply Gauss-Newton Method with Armijo line-search embedded in a multi-level coarse-to-fine scheme\, where the solution of the coarse level is used to generate the initial point for the fine level. DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, February 6\, 2018\, at 12:00  Prof. Fredi Tröltzsch of TU Berlin will present his recent work entitled  \nOptimal and Feedback Control of some Reaction-Diffusion Equations \nThe optimal control of some systems of nonlinear reaction-diffusion equations is considered including several important equations of mathematical physics. In particular\, equations are covered that develop traveling wave fronts\, spiral waves\, scroll rings\, or propagating spot solutions. Well-posedness of the system\, differentiability of the control-to-state mapping\, and optimality conditions of first and second order are briefly sketched. In particular\, the case of sparse optimal control is addressed. A novel application of pointwise state constraints is presented that prevent a propagating spot from hitting the boundary of the spatial domain. Finally\, the optimization of time-delays in local and nonlocal Pyragas type feedback control is discussed. DESCRIPTION:On Monday\, January 22\, 2018\, at 16:00 Prof. Andrea Walther of Paderborn University will join the ALOP-Colloquium and present her recent work entitled: \nRecent progress in the optimization of piecewise smooth functions \nIn a previous paper\, we derived first and second order convexity conditions for a large class  of piecewise smooth functions. \nIn that analysis based on piecewise linearization\, a key assumption was the Linear Independence Kink Qualification (LIKQ)\, a generalization of the Linear Independence Constraint Qualification (LICQ) known from smooth nonlinear optimization. In this talk\, we discuss recent results for the optimization of this class of functions. \nThis includes that even without any kink qualifications\, local optimality of the nonlinear objective always requires local optimality of its piecewise linearization\, and strict minimality of the latter is in fact equivalent to strong local minimality of the former.  Moreover\, we analyse convergence rates for an optimization algorithm based on successive piecewise linearization. Apart from providing scientific insight into complex nonlinear processes\, mathematical models are fundamental for process simulation\, optimization and control. In this context the new paradigmatic concept of “digital twins” may be worth mentioning\, which is becoming more and more attractive among researchers from different industrial companies\, and is advocated by NASA\, GE\, Siemens and others. Its idea is that every new system\, product or a physical or economical process should be accompanied by a “digital twin”\, which comprises an ensemble of mathematical models and algorithms. This collection of models\, analysis and solution algorithms – a virtual avatar or virtual double – would ideally accompany the process from the “origin” through its life time\, “grow” together with this process\, and be used among others to analyze data\, predict malfunctioning and perform optimal operation. However\, the application of mathematical models for the simulation\, and even more for the optimization and control of complex engineering processes requires their thorough validation and calibration by parameter and state estimation based on process data\, which should preferably be obtained by optimized experiments\, and optimized measurement designs.  For the latter\, very efficient numerical methods for the complex non-standard optimal control problem of optimal experimental design for dynamic processes were developed\, which have proven to be a powerful mathematical instrument/technology of high economic impact in industrial practice. \n  \nThe talk will address new developments in optimization methods for validation and calibration of models\, in particular the design of robust optimal experiments based on a second order sensitivity analysis of parameter estimates and design of optimal experiments for PDE models. \n  \nThe presentation will take place in HS9. \nPlease join us for coffee at 15:45 in E10.

DESCRIPTION:On Monday\, June 26 2017\,  Dr. Giorgio Ferrari with Bielefeld University will join the ALOP-Colloquium and present his recent work entitled  \nOn the Optimal Management of Public Debt: a Singular Stochastic Control Problem \n  \nConsider the problem of a government that wants to reduce the debt-to-GDP (gross domestic product) ratio of a country. The government aims at choosing a debt reduction policy which minimises the total expected cost of having debt\, plus the total expected cost of interventions on the debt ratio. We model this problem as a singular stochastic control problem over an infinite time-horizon. In a general not necessarily Markovian framework\, we first show by probabilistic arguments that the optimal debt reduction policy can be expressed in terms of the optimal stopping rule of an auxiliary optimal stopping problem. We then exploit such link to characterise the optimal control in a two-dimensional Markovian setting in which the state variables are the level of the debt-to-GDP ratio and the current inflation rate of the country. The latter follows uncontrolled Ornstein-Uhlenbeck dynamics and affects the growth rate of the debt ratio. We show that it is optimal for the government to adopt a policy that keeps the debt-to-GDP ratio under an inflation-dependent ceiling. This curve is given in terms of the solution of a nonlinear integral equation arising in the study of a fully two-dimensional optimal stopping problem. \n  \nThe presentation will take place in HS9. \nPlease join us for coffee at 15:45 in E10.

DESCRIPTION:On Monday\, June 12\, 2017\,  Prof. Gabriel Wittum of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology  will join the ALOP-Colloquium and present his recent work entitled \nSimulation of Neuronal Signal Processing \nThe crucial feature of neuronal ensembles is their high complexity and variability. This makes modelling and computation very difficult\, in particular for detailed models based on first principles. The problem starts with modelling geometry\, which has to extract the essential features from those highly complex and variable phenotypes and at the same time has to take in to account the stochastic variability. Moreover\, models of the highly complex processes which are living on these geometries are far from being well established\, since those are highly complex too and couple on a hierarchy of scales in space and time. Simulating such systems always puts the whole approach to test\, including modeling\, numerical methods and software implementations. In combination with validation based on experimental data\, all components have to be enhanced to reach a reliable solving strategy. \nTo handle problems of this complexity\, new mathematical methods and software tools are required. In recent years\, new approaches such as parallel adaptive multigrid methods and corresponding software tools have been developed allowing to treat problems of huge complexity. In the lecture we present a three dimensional model for the simulation of signal processing in neurons. Part of this approach is a method to reconstruct the geometric structure of neurons from data measured by 2-photon microscopy. Being able to reconstruct neural geometries and network connectivities from measured data is the basis of understanding coding of motoric perceptions and long term plasticity which is one of the main topics of neuroscience. DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, June 9 2017\,  Prof. Lorenz T. (Larry) Biegler\,  will join the ALOP-Colloquium and present his recent work.  \nLorenz T. (Larry) Biegler is currently the Head and Bayer University Professor of Chemical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. His research interests lie in computer aided process engineering (CAPE) and include flowsheet optimization\, optimization of systems of differential and algebraic equations\, reactor network synthesis and algorithms for constrained\, nonlinear process control. Projects in these areas include analysis and development of nonlinear programming algorithms\, optimization software design and application to real-world chemical processes and energy systems. He has authored or co-authored over 400 archival publications and two textbooks\, edited nine technical books and given numerous invited presentations at national and international conferences. \n  \nNonlinear Programming Properties and Formulations for Nonlinear and Economic Model Predictive Control \n  \nNonlinear Model Predictive Control (NMPC) is a powerful approach for on-line optimization of nonlinear\, dynamic systems. This talk explores nonlinear programming (NLPs) formulations that ensure the stability and robustness of NMPC strategies.  In particular\, NLPs that satisfy familiar second order and regularity conditions have solutions that are continuous and differentiable with respect to perturbations of the problem data\, and are important prerequisites for nominal and ISS stability of NMPC controllers. Moreover\, ensuring these properties is not difficult through reformulation of the NLP subproblem and addition of exact penalty and barrier terms.  This framework is also essential for the extension of NMPC to sensitivity-based NMPC and economic NMPC\, thus leading to efficient\, on-line optimization strategies that guarantee stable and robust performance. DESCRIPTION:On Monday\, May 29\, 2017\,  Prof. François Glineur from the Université catholique de Louvain will join the ALOP-Colloquium and present his recent work entitled \nPerformance estimation of first-order methods for composite convex optimization \nComposite convex optimization consists in the minimization of a convex objective function equal to the sum of several convex functions with different properties\, for example a smooth term and a nonsmooth term. We consider a large class of first-order methods designed to solve such composite problems\, which rely on specific oracles for each term. We show that the worst-case performance of each of those methods can be computed exactly by solving a semidefinite optimization problem\, which also produces an explicit problem instance for which this worst-case is attained. \nThe performance estimation methodology was born in the original work of Drori and Teboulle in 2014\, which introduced a semidefinite relaxation to study the behaviour of first-order optimization algorithms for smooth unconstrained convex optimization. In this talk\, we present a framework that produces exact convergence bounds for fixed-step linear first-order methods applied to general composite convex optimization. These methods include classical and accelerated gradient methods (including constrained and proximal variants)\, conditional gradient and subgradient methods\, and also allow inexact gradient computations. \nIn particular\, our approach allows us to derive exact convergence rates for the proximal gradient method in function value\, gradient residual norm and distance to the solution\, backed by independently-checkable analytical proofs. We also use numerical computations to obtain worst-case rates for several well-known methods including accelerated gradient and the conditional gradient method\, improving on the best published rates. We conclude with a quick overview of a MATLAB toolbox implementing our framework\, called PESTO (Performance Estimation Toolbox)\, available from https://github.com/AdrienTaylor/Performance-Estimation-Toolbox \nThis is a joint work with Adrien B. Typically\, A is large and sparse\, so computing f(A) directly is not possible\, but subspace techniques allow to approximate f(A)b. In this talk will address issues related to the computation and to theconvergence analysis for Krylov subspace based methods. The outstanding problem in computation is how to obtain a stable restart procedure\, and we show how this can be achieved when f can be adequately represented by a contour integral. On the analytical side\, we present convergence results when f is a Stieltjes function and A is symmetric and positive denite and\, with appropriate modications\, when A is just positive denite but not necessarily symmetric. DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, April 19\, 2017\,  Dr. Marta D’Elia from the Computer Science Research Institute at Sandia National Laboratories will join the ALOP-Colloquium and present her recent work entitled  \nA coupling strategy for nonlocal and local models with applications to static peridynamics and classical elasticity \nABSTRACT: The use of nonlocal models in science and engineering applications has been steadily increasing over the past decade. The ability of nonlocal theories to accurately capture effects that are difficult or impossible to represent by local Partial Differential Equation (PDE) models motivates and drives the interest in this type of simulations. However\, the improved accuracy of nonlocal models comes at the price of a significant increase in computational costs compared to\, e.g.\, traditional PDEs. In particular\, a complete nonlocal simulation remains computationally untenable for many science and engineering applications. As a result\, it is important to develop local-to-nonlocal coupling strategies\, which aim to combine the accuracy of nonlocal models with the computational efficiency of PDEs. The basic idea is to use the more efficient PDE model everywhere except in those parts of the domain that require the improved accuracy of the nonlocal model.  We develop and analyze an optimization-based method for the coupling of nonlocal and local problems in the context of nonlocal elasticity. The approach formulates the coupling as a control problem where the states are the solutions of the nonlocal and local equations\, the objective is to minimize their mismatch on the overlap of the nonlocal and local domains\, and the controls are virtual volume constraints and boundary conditions. We prove that the resulting optimization problem is well-posed and discuss its implementation using Sandia’s agile software components toolkit.  Numerical results for nonlocal diffusion in three-dimensions illustrate key properties of the optimization-based coupling method; these numerical tests provide the groundwork for the development of efficient and effective engineering analysis tools. This is for instance the case with the low-rank matrix and tensor completion problems However\, the standard theory of Riemannian optimisation leaves some questions unanswered regarding its theoretical and practical application. I will focus on two such questions. The first is how the (Riemannian) metric has a significant impact on the convergence of the numerical methods which I will illustrate by deriving recovery guarantees assuming RIP. The second topic is rank adaptivity. In rank-constrained optimisation\, the rank is typically not known and instead one is searching for the smallest rank satisfying a certain criterion\, like a small residual. I will explain how the geometry of the tangent cone of the variety of matrices of bounded rank can be incorporated so as to obtain rank adaptive algorithms that stay true to the manifold paradigm. \n  \nAt 15:45 there will be a coffee hour in E10. DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, January 19\, 2017\,  Prof. Dr. Armin Fuegenschuh from the Helmut Schmidt Universitaet Hamburg will join the ALOP-Colloquium and present his recent work entitled \nDesign Issues for Magnetic Rulers \n We deal with the design of a magnetic ruler as an absolute positioning system. Trapezoid-shaped magnetic areas are placed side by side\, so that the resulting pattern enables a unique encoding of each position up to a micrometer level. The problem of finding a longest-possible ruler from a set of elementary magnetic areas is formulated as a linear mixed-integer problem\, and solved with a mixture of a heuristic and an extact approach. We demonstrate how to approximate the magnetic signal\, using measured data from Hall sensor cells. From there\, we discuss how the absolute position is recovered. Practical problems\, such as measuring in an unknown altitude\, are addressed.  \n (This is joint work with: M. Fügenschuh\, M. Ludszuweit\, A. Mojsic\, & J. DESCRIPTION:On November 28\, 2016\,  Dr. Benedikt Wilbertz will join the ALOP-Colloquium and present his recent work entitled \n Hot Topics in Machine Learning \nAbstract \nThe history of machine learning goes back to the late 50s\, when the first perceptron models were created to build machines that lean from observations. \nIt took until the mid 80s that Yann LeCun constructed a neural network which can be considered as the first production read application of modern machine learning. \nSince then\, the field shifted its focus more towards statistics and probability theory\, which gave birth to bagging\, boosting and the random forest algorithm. \nOnly very recently and with the availability of huge training sets and the incredible computing power of GPGPU devices\, neural networks had a massive comeback as Deep Learning methods and established many new state of the art results in for speech recognition\, image analysis\, natural language processing etc. \nIn this talk we give an overview over the recent developments in the field Deep Learning\, but also present some new implementation of boosting algorithms and show some practical applications. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n At 15:45 there will be a coffee hour in E10.
