SUMMARY:Optimization Days - Math Workshop for Female Master Students
DESCRIPTION:Optimization Days – a Math Workshop for Female Master Students will take place in Trier\, Germany from 4 October through 6 October\, 2018.   \nGetting ready to cross the finish line? This workshop will support you in your final steps with courses on “How to write a Mathematical Thesis” by Prof. Dr. Mirjam Dür and “Presenting yourself in Public” by actress Barbara Ullmann. In addition\, you will have  a chance to meet with local PhD students to discuss your field of interest and collaborate on your research. \nParticipants: \nWe welcome applications from female students currently pursuing a master degree in mathematics. \nSchedule: \nThe workshop is scheduled to begin on Thursday\, October 4\, 2018 in the afternoon and conclude on Saturday\, October 6\, 2018 in the morning. \nPlease check back for more details as they are finalized. \nWorkshop Language: \nEnglish \nOrganizers: \nProf. Dr. Mirjam Dür\, Universität Augsburg \nSvenja Kohnemann\, Universität Trier (local host and contact person) \nRTG Algorithmic Optimization (ALOP) \nRegistration is now closed. \nThe reference and graduation information is needed to confirm your eligibility as a master student in the field of mathematics. \nRegistration Deadline:  August 13\, 2018  extended to September 15\, 2018\n \nUpon completion of the registration form\, participants will be eligible to receive a stipend.  Letters of invitation to attend the workshop and confirming eligibility will be sent via e-mail no later than September 20\, 2018. Should you need an invitation prior to that time\, please let us know. \nRegistration Fee: \n35 € \nAn invoice for the registration fee will be forwarded via e-mail on or about September 5\, 2018. Please follow the instructions for payment contained therein. \nHotel: \nParticipants will be staying at the  conference hotel (exact name and location to be announced).  We will make the reservations on your behalf. DESCRIPTION:On Monday\, October 29\, 2018 at 16:00 c.t. Prof. Dr. Ir. Arie M.C. A. Koster  of RWTH Aachen will present his recent work entitled \nRobust Combinatorial Optimization – New Problems and Solutions \nAbstract: \nThe growing need to deal with uncertainties in optimization processes has lead to many new research directions. In robust optimization\, an uncertainty set has to be defined containing all scenarios to be considered. Availability of historical data often suggests the use of a discrete or polyhedral uncertainty set. By this\, new combinatorial optimization problems are evolved. \nIn this talk\, we discuss a few examples of novel combinatorial optimization problems inspired by uncertainties in network design and production planning. Further\, this talk should motivate research on the additional complexity introduced by uncertainties. \n  \nThe presentation will take place in HS 9. \nPlease join us for coffee at 15:45 in E10.
