ALOP-Colloquium with Martin Berggren

On May 23 Martin Berggren from the Department of Computing Science at Umeå University will join the ALOP-Colloquium and present his recent work. At 15:45 there will be a coffee hour in E10. At 16:15 the presentation will take place in HS10.
A system involving acoustic or electromagnetic wave motion can often be characterized using an
associated balance law that involves an energy density, a power flux through surfaces, and various loss
terms. Devices that guide such wave motion can be thought of as mechanisms to manipulate a balance
law for the system. This point of view is useful when applying numerical design optimization techniques
to design such devices. I will present a number of case studies in which the energy balance laws guide the
construction of wave-guiding devices. Examples are acoustical horns and subwoofers as well as antennas
and microwave devices, which are designed using either boundary-shape optimization or material
distribution topology optimization.
